20 years ago, the US coined the phrase ‘axis of evil’. Guess who’s been the most evil since?

Robert Bridge Judging by the way past US leaders have described their rivals, you’d think Washington has been fighting against the likes of Darth Vader. On March 8, 1983, then-President Ronald Reagan branded the Soviet Union, America’s Cold War adversary, as an “evil empire” that was the “focus of evil in the modern world.” Fast forward nearly two decades later to January 29, 2002 and George W. Bush echoed Reagan’s fiery sermon in his State of the Union message when he described North Korea, Iran, and Iraq as rogue states…

North Korea fires longest range missile since 2017

North Korea fired what is presumed to be its longest range ballistic missile since 2017 on Sunday, an escalation of its weapons program and a possible sign of larger tests to come, according to South Korea's President. Both the South Korean and Japanese governments reported the launch of an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM), with officials in Tokyo saying the missile reached a height of 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles) with a range of 800 kilometers (497 miles), before falling into waters off the east coast…

UAE summons people for sharing videos of missile attack interception

The United Arab Emirates public prosecutors' office said on Wednesday it had summoned several people for sharing videos showing defense systems intercepting Monday's missile attack by Yemen's Houthi movement. The UAE, the region's commercial and tourism hub, rarely discusses its security in public but had confirmed the two Houthi attacks that took place a week apart, in the first assaults on the Gulf state. "The Public Prosecution warned that such (video) clips endanger vital and military installations, and can…

Islamic State may have been forgotten, but they are not gone

Anyone remember Islamic State? For a time, they took over large swathes of Syria and Iraq, and their other activities included chopping people’s heads off and committing acts of terror. They were, for a while, front page news almost every day, dominating the TV channels and airwaves. They also managed to export their warped ideology out of the Middle East, which led to a number of terrorist attacks across Europe, including in Paris, Brussels, Nice, Manchester, London, and many, many more. However, they are…

Saudi-led coalition denies targeting Yemeni detention center after airstrikes kill 70

The coalition led by Saudi Arabia fighting in Yemen denied that it deliberately targeted a detention center in airstrikes on Friday that killed dozens and caused a nationwide internet blackout. The Iran-back Houthi rebels, who control much of Yemen, blamed the Saudi-led coalition for the strike in the northern city of Sa'ada. On Saturday, a spokesman for the coalition, Brigadier Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, called those claims "baseless and unfounded," according to Saudi state news agency SPA. At least 70 people were…

Ukrainian President pushes back on Biden: ‘There are no minor incursions’

"We want to remind the great powers that there are no minor incursions and small nations," Zelensky wrote on Twitter in an apparent response Biden's remarks on Wednesday. "Just as there are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones." Biden's comments at a news conference Wednesday about the prospect of Russian military action alarmed Ukrainian officials as Russia has amassed tens of thousands of troops along the border. While US officials have engaged in multiple rounds of diplomatic talks with…

North Korea says it will reconsider its moratorium on nuclear and long-range missile tests

North Korea said it will bolster its defense against the United States and evaluate "restarting all temporally suspended activities," according to state media KCNA on Thursday. The announcement is a possible reference to its self-imposed moratorium on testing nuclear weapons, which has been in place since 2017. Though Pyongyang is barred from testing ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons under international law, it has continued developing the weapons in violation of the ban. In a report about a Politburo…

Palestinian family home demolished in sensitive East Jerusalem neighborhood

A Palestinian family has been removed from their home in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem in an overnight operation carried out by Israeli police. The Jerusalem municipality said the eviction had been carried out following district court approval and would mean a school for local children with special needs could be built on the site. The large operation began on Monday when Israeli police and municipality workers, backed up by dozens of heavily armed Israeli special forces, moved in with a…
