Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, is an airborne contagious infection, which has been currently declared as pandemic as the number of infected individuals is continuously increasing across the world. More than 6,518,112 individuals have been confirmed with having coronavirus around the world, out of which 384,808 people have died after experiencing severe symptoms of the infection. To combat this escalating global issue, Ibuprofen tested as a treatment for coronavirus.

Potential antidote for coronavirus pandemic

There have been multiple drugs used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, including chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, which has been previously prescribed for the treatment of coronavirus in life-threatening conditions. But due to their possible permanent harmful side effects on the body, including a few deaths after consuming autoimmune treatment drugs, these are not generally used by people.

As production of a new drug for the sole purpose of treating COVID-19 would take years in discovery, clinical trials, and mass manufacturing, scientists across the world are looking for possible treatment of coronavirus with already manufactured drugs approved by the Food and Drug Association. A group of scientists is working to see ibuprofen tested as a treatment for coronavirus, helping COVID-19 positive patients in hospitals to recover rapidly.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that also works as a pain killer, helping in the treatment of difficulty in breathing. Doctors are hoping that giving ibuprofen to critically ill coronavirus patients could help relieve some symptoms after ibuprofen tested as a treatment for coronavirus. In multiple previous studies, ibuprofen shows the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome in animals.

Earlier this year, when the pandemic was in its initial stages, some doctors in France warned the general population across the earth that the consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including ibuprofen, would aggravate the symptoms of coronavirus in patients suffering from mild symptoms.

Even though Ibuprofen tested as a treatment for coronavirus, usage of paracetamol, and over the counter pain relievers can also be used to reduce high body temperature and reduce flu symptoms. For those individuals who have been diagnosed with coronavirus and are also suffering from stomach ulcers, cardiac diseases and kidney problems should avoid consumption of ibuprofen as the drug could aggravate these symptoms.

Usage of NSAIDs as ibuprofen tested as a treatment for coronavirus could help reduce the use of ventilator by severely ill patients and fast recovery rate.

Clinical trial to test ibuprofen treatment for coronavirus

There is an ongoing clinical trial in London for ibuprofen tested as a treatment for coronavirus after a successful trial in animals suffering from respiratory distress, a common symptom of COVID-19. The trial has been named Liberate, which contains around 230 individuals. Half of the people in this trial group will receive a special formula of Ibuprofen, which is slightly different than the normally available formulation at the drug stores.

The other half of the group will receive the standard caring, including a continuous supply of oxygen. This trial contains all COVID-19 patients in critical conditions, but only requires periodic monitoring by nursing. The observation of this trial is not linked with mild symptoms of COVID-19 infection as ibuprofen tested as a treatment for coronavirus.

The worst-hit country crosses the world is the United States containing 1,891,433 confirmed coronavirus cases, followed by Brazil and Russia. To control the further transmission of the infection into the surrounding environment, strict lockdowns are being implemented in various countries to limit contact. Multiple countries have reopened and reduced the strictness in lockdown, but still implementing the protocols of social distancing, which will help reduce and prevent further spread of the infection, limiting new coronavirus cases.
