The co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board of directors as he desires to give more of his time towards philanthropic work. Gates used to be the CEO of Microsoft until 2000 when he stepped down to give more of his priorities towards the foundation he and his wife built together called the Bill and Miranda Gates Foundation. The couple was named as the most magnanimous humanitarians in the United States in 2018 when they donated $4.8 billion to their foundation the year before.
Later in 2008, Bill Gates had left Microsoft full time to provide his undivided attention towards philanthropy. In the recent events as Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board is apparently due to the similar motivations as before.
Bill Gates dropped out of college and started Microsoft, along with his friend Paul Allen (died 2018) in New Mexico in the 1970s. They were first recognized by IBM when they were contacted to build the first operating system, which is now known as MS-DOS. In 1986, Microsoft went public, and Bill Gates became one of the youngest self-made billionaire.
Bill Gates has been listed as the second richest man in the World, with the net worth of $103.6 billion, after the founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos. Even as Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board, he owns 1.36% of Microsoft and is among the once who owns the largest shares of the company. After many years of hard work by Bill Gates along with many others, the company which produces software for the personal computer is now one of the most highly valued companies with the market value of $1.21 trillion.

The current CEO of Microsoft is Satya Nadella, who joined in 2014. Before Nadella, Steve Ballmer was the CEO of Microsoft since Bill Gates stepped down in 2000. The role of technology adviser by Gates was taken up in 2014 at CEO Satya’s request.
According to Nadella, Bill Gates founded Microsoft with the vision of forming software that would provide a solution to society’s challenges. The company has benefitted a lot from the leadership, creativity, and innovations by Bill Gates and Microsoft will continue to benefit from it by Gates being a technical adviser. Nadella also states that she, alongside Bill Gates, would like to work to empower every individual and every corporation around the globe to attain more.

At the age of 67, Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board to focus more on his philanthropic works, which includes global health crisis, education sector development, and severe climatic changes that are happening around the world. Bill Gates has also left the board of directors of Berkshire Hathaway with whom he had been working alongside since 2004.
During the announcement, as Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board, he stated that Microsoft would always be an integral part of his life and will continue to look over the company and be engaged with the important decisions of Microsoft.
